Applicants From Overseas (Except New Zealand)
Section 15 Pharmacy Act 1964

Requirements for Registration
Applications from pharmacists who obtained their original qualification overseas are divided into two groups:

  1. Pharmacists Qualified in the United Kingdom, Ireland, USA or Canada
The requirements for registration as a pharmacist in Australia are satisfactory completion of the Australian Pharmacy Examining Committee (APEC) Stream B process.

    This includes:

    1. successful completion of Competency Assessment of Overseas Pharmacists (CAOP) examination.
    2. satisfactory completion of a period of supervised practice in Australia (minimum four week period, to be determined by the Pharmacy Board of New South Wales).
    3. assessment by the Pharmacy Board of New South Wales. This assessment will include a national examination of pharmacy law, ethics and calculations.
    4. For information concerning the APEC Stream B process and eligibility to sit the CAOP examination contact:

    Australian Pharmacy Examining Committee
PO Box 269 Civic Square ACT 2608 Australia
    Telephone: 61 2 6247 5088 Facsimile: 61 2 6247 9611
    E-mail: apec@apec.asn.au Website: www.apec.asn.au
and your enquiries should be directed to the Assessments Officer.

  2. Application for registration from pharmacists originally registered in any other overseas country
    (except New Zealand)

It is necessary for applicants to contact the Australian Pharmacy Examining Council (APEC) in Canberra (see links and contacts) and undertake the certification program conducted by APEC. Following successful completion of the program, applicants will then be considered for registration.

  3. Interstate Registration

All pharmacists, who are already registered in another State, Territory or New Zealand and wish to apply for registration in New South Wales, may apply under the provisions of the Mutual Recognition Act without any need to meet any other requirements. Similarly those registered in New South Wales may apply for registration in any other State, Territory or New Zealand under the same provisions of the Mutual Recognition Act.

PROVISIONAL REGISTRATION IS NOT AVAILABLE TO PERSONS REGISTERED UNDER SECTION 15. REGISTRATION IS ABLE TO BE GRANTED ONLY AT A MEETING OF THE BOARD. MEETINGS ARE HELD ON THE SECOND WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH.

  4. General
